How to use the mouse test

  • Buttons: click left, right and middle (press the wheel down), then the two side buttons. Each tile counts the clicks and lights up while you hold the button.
  • Scroll wheel: scroll up and down. Each counter should go up by one for every notch. A wheel that jumps the wrong way now and then has a dirty or worn encoder.
  • Tilt wheel: if your wheel tilts left and right, the side counter shows it.
  • Double clicks: click normally for a while. If the test warns about an unwanted double click, the switch probably bounces.

Side buttons may still trigger Back and Forward in some browsers while the pointer is outside the box. Keep the pointer inside the box when you test them.

What the double click warning means

When you click once, a worn switch can bounce and send two clicks a few milliseconds apart. A person cannot click twice that fast on purpose, so two presses closer than 80 ms almost always come from the switch. If you get a warning, click slowly a dozen times. If it keeps coming up, the switch is failing. Use the double click test for a focused check.

How to fix a mouse that double clicks

  1. Check the setting first. On Windows, open Control Panel, Mouse, Buttons, and set the double-click speed to the middle. Check that ClickLock is off. On Mac, open System Settings, Accessibility, Pointer Control, and check the double-click speed.
  2. Clean the button. Blow compressed air into the gap around the button and click it many times quickly.
  3. Update the mouse software. Gaming mice from Logitech, Razer, SteelSeries and others let you raise the debounce time in their app. A higher debounce time filters out the extra clicks.
  4. Check the warranty. Double clicking is a known wear fault on many mice and is often covered.
  5. Replace the switch. If you are handy with a soldering iron, a new micro switch costs very little and fixes the fault for good.

Scroll wheel jumping or not working

Blow compressed air around the wheel while you roll it. On Windows, check Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Mouse, and set the number of lines per scroll. Mouse software can also remap the wheel, so check it too.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most about this test.

How do I test my mouse online?

Click each button and scroll the wheel inside the box on this page. Each button has a counter, and the scroll wheel counts up and down separately.

How do I know if my mouse double clicks?

Click normally in the test area. If one click is counted as two within 80 ms, the page shows a warning. That points to a worn switch.

Why do my side buttons not show up?

Some mice need their own software to send side button clicks, and some browsers use them for Back and Forward first. Keep the pointer inside the box and check the mouse software.

Can I test a laptop touchpad here?

Yes. Tap or click the touchpad in the box. Two-finger scrolling shows as scroll up and down.
